50 of the Craziest Laws in America, One From Each State

While federal policies are supposed to protect and benefit the American people, we can all name a few that are ludicrous or excessive: Obamacare, Michelle Obama’s school lunch program, Common Core curriculum – the list goes on and on.
Independent Journal Review and Policy Mic have pulled together a list of 50 of the most ridiculous laws, one from each state, that might be competition with the insanity of the Obama administration’s agenda.
While we don’t have an explanation for the passing of these laws, it’s amusing that such enactments were obviously written due to an incident related to each strange policy.
Behold the absurdity: vips
ALABAMA: You can’t wear a fake mustache that causes laughter in church.
ALASKA: It’s against the law to wake bears for the purposes of taking a picture.
ARIZONA: It’s illegal to drive a car in reverse.
ARKANSAS: You’re not allowed to pronounce Arkansas incorrectly.
CALIFORNIA: You will be fined if you detonate a nuclear device.
COLORADO: People must not dress unbecoming of their sex.
CONNECTICUT: Scrabble is not to be played while politicians are giving an oration.
DELAWARE: You may not marry on a dare.
FLORIDA: Women who kill themselves by electrocution in a bathtub with a “self-beautification utensil” will be fined.
GEORGIA: You can’t keep ice cream in your back pocket on Sundays.
HAWAII: Everyone is required to own a boat.
IDAHO: Motorists or pedestrians may not scowl or grimace.
ILLINOIS: Midget tossing is illegal in bars, but is legal in other parts of the city if you have a permit.
INDIANA: Everyone is required to work on a public road six days a year.
IOWA: One-armed piano players must perform for free.
KANSAS: If two trains meet on the same track, neither shall proceed until the other has passed.
KENTUCKY: It’s required that you register all nude people in your home.
LOUISIANA: It is an assault for a person wearing false teeth to bite someone.
MAINE: You can’t buy a car on Sunday unless it has plumbing.
MARYLAND: One cannot spit on the sidewalk.
MASSACHUSETTS: The sexual position “woman on top” is illegal.
MICHIGAN: It’s against the law to have sex in a car unless it’s parked on your own property.
MINNESOTA: You must list your date of death on tax forms.
MISSISSIPPI: A man must not seduce a woman by promising her marriage.
MISSOURI: Single men between 18 and 50 must pay a $1 tax.
MONTANA: Seven or more Indians are considered a raiding or war party… and you can shoot them. (Today, we call that racism…)
NEBRASKA: It’s illegal to go whale fishing within the state.
NEVADA: A man can’t buy drinks for more than three people at a time.
NEW HAMPSHIRE: It’s illegal to show a movie before 2 pm.
NEW JERSEY: One cannot sell cabbage on Sundays.
NEW MEXICO: Idiots may not vote. Nor may insane people.

NEW YORK: You may not stick your thumb to your nose and wiggle your fingers at someone.
NORTH CAROLINA: Bingo games cannot last more than 5 hours.
NORTH DAKOTA: Beer and pretzels cannot be served at the same time.
OHIO: One cannot kill a housefly within 160 feet of a church.
OKLAHOMA: It’s illegal to make funny faces at dogs.
OREGON: Canned corn is not to be used as fishing bait.
PENNSYLVANIA: It’s a crime to tell a fortune-teller where to dig for buried treasure.
RHODE ISLAND: Lunacy is grounds for divorce.
SOUTH CAROLINA: You have to be at least 18 to play a pinball machine.
SOUTH DAKOTA: You can’t sleep in a cheese factory.
TENNESSEE: Crimes against nature are illegal.
TEXAS: Criminals must notify their victims 24 hours in advance of the nature of their crimes yet to be committed.
UTAH: Husbands are responsible for their wives’ criminal behavior in their presence.
VERMONT: Margarine must be served in triangle patties.
VIRGINIA: The chicken labor lobby has set the egg laying workday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
WASHINGTON: All lollipops are banned.
WEST VIRGINIA: Roadkill may be taken home for dinner.
WISCONSIN: It’s illegal to serve margarine to prisoners.
WYOMING: It’s against the law to have sex while standing up in a walk-in meat freezer.
Yes, all of these laws are real. But it’s fairly certain that, should you choose to break one, punishment will probably not be enforced. After all, New Mexico still has registered Democrats.

WHAT TEENS REALLY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT SEX

Remember how weird it was to ask questions about sex as a teenager? High school teacher Al Vernacchio answers his students’ questions about everything from DIY birth control to how to tell when a guy really likes you, in an excerpt from his new book.
On the first day of my Sexuality and Society class, I don’t pass around anatomy drawings. I don’t hand out pamphlets about safer sex, although those are stacked on a table near the door. Instead, the first thing I do is establish ground rules. People should speak for themselves, laughter is OK, we won’t ask “personal history” questions, and we’ll work to create a community of peers who care about and respect one another. Only then can we get to work.

I’M ALL ABOUT CONTEXT. TALKING ABOUT SEXUALITY, INTIMACY, RELATIONSHIPS, AND PLEASURE CAN’T BE DONE IN A VACUUM

In the back corner of my classroom is an old shoebox with a hole cut into the top of it. Next to the box are scraps of paper and some pencils. This is the Question Box, a place where kids can drop any question they have about human sexuality. I answer the questions both during class time and on a blog I maintain at school.
Here are some actual questions from students and my answers to them. I haven’t done any fancy editing; these are the questions just as the kids asked them. They run the gamut from innocent to downright technical. My answers are exactly as I gave them, to show how even a simple question allows for both information and value clarification to be offered in response. Here goes:
Why is sex so good?
There are two ways to answer this question. From the biological perspective, sex feels good for an important evolutionary reason. If a species, like ours, is going to reproduce sexually, then there’s an advantage if that action also feels good. As I’ve often said, if sex felt like getting your tooth drilled at the dentist, people wouldn’t have it very often, and that could eventually threaten the survival of our species. Our bodies have evolved so that our genital regions, as well as many, many other parts of the body, are sensitive to sexual stimulation.
A part of the body that brings sexual pleasure when stimulated is called an erogenous zone. This does not mean just our genitals. All of us have many places on our bodies that result in sexual pleasure when stimulated. Knowing your own and your partner’s erogenous zones can lead to much more fulfilling sexual experiences. The mechanisms of sexual pleasure involve a combination of nerve impulses, blood flow, and muscle tension. To find out more about this, you might Google the phrase “human sexual response cycle” and look at the work of Masters and Johnson, two famous sex researchers who studied the body changes that happen when people get sexually excited.

WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT IF WE COULD SAY, “THE THURSDAY FOLLOWING YOUR SIXTH DATE IS THE MOST APPROPRIATE DAY TO START HAVING SEX”? OF COURSE, THAT’S NOT THE WAY IT WORKS.

The second reason sex feels good is that humans have developed the emotional capacity to feel love, intimacy, and passion. These emotional states highlight and deepen sexual pleasure.
While pleasure can exist without these emotions, it is much more significant when they are present.
When is someone emotionally and physically ready for sex?
I wish I had an answer that would be right for all people at all times, but the real answer is “it depends.” We are all unique individuals, and our relationships are all unique. Because of that, there can’t be a standard answer to this question. Wouldn’t it be great if we could say, “The Thursday following your sixth date is the most appropriate day to start having sex”? But, of course, that’s not the way it works.
EMOTIONALLY, A PERSON HAS TO  BE READY TO FACE OTHER PEOPLE’S RESPONSE, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.

I think it’s appropriate to start being sexually active with a sweetheart (and remember: I define sexually active as being involved with someone else’s body for the purpose of giving and receiving sexual pleasure) when intimacy, commitment, and passion are established and both people have pretty equal amounts of these feelings for each other. I don’t think these things develop quickly, so I don’t think sexual activity is appropriate on a first date or early in a new relationship.
I also think people aren’t ready to become sexually active if they can’t talk about it with their partners in a serious way, and also talk about safer sex practices, contraception (if appropriate), and possible positive and negative consequences and how they’d deal with them. Emotionally, a person has to be ready to face other people’s response, positive or negative, to the sexual activity and be willing to share those emotional reactions with his or her partner.
As you can see, I think it takes a lot for a couple to be ready to engage in sexual activity. If any of the above things aren’t in place, I’d say you’re not ready.
Could you use a balloon as a condom?
Short Answer—ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! UNSAFE! UNHEALTHY! DANGER! DANGER!
Longer Answer: OK, I’m calmer now. Condoms are made to be condoms; balloons are made to be balloons. Both can be made of latex, but that doesn’t mean they’re interchangeable. You wouldn’t use a pencil eraser as a car tire even t
hough they’re both made of rubber, would you?

IF A PERSON DOESN’T FEEL CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO ACQUIRE CONDOMS, THEN MAYBE THEY SHOULDN’T BE HAVING INTERCOURSE.

Condoms, when used correctly, are an essential tool in reducing the risk of pregnancy and STIs. They work so well because they’re designed for that purpose. No condom substitute (balloon, plastic baggie, sock—whatever) will provide the same level of protection, and some can do more harm than good. So insist on the original! Sometimes people ask about condom substitutes because they don’t know where to get condoms or are embarrassed to get them. Condoms can be purchased at any local drugstore; there are no age requirements for buying condoms and no prescriptions are necessary. Free condoms are available from many health clinics, sexual health agencies, and even some schools (although ours does not provide free condoms at this time).
Here’s an important thing to consider. If a person doesn’t feel confident enough to acquire condoms, then maybe they shouldn’t be having intercourse. Being ready for sexual intercourse means being able to handle all aspects of the situation, including protecting oneself and one’s sweetheart from unwanted consequences. Remember my rule about sexual activity—“ If you can’t look your partner in the eye and talk about it, then you can’t do it with them.” My rule for condoms is, “If you can’t take responsibility for securing condoms, then you’re not allowed to have the kind of sexual activity that calls for using condoms.”
How can you tell if a guy likes you?
I know you’re really hoping for a clear-cut answer here, but that’s just not the way it works, I’m afraid. People can react in all kinds of ways when they like you. Some people get really quiet around you. Others will make sure you notice them. Some will tease you or act annoying. Some will just silently stare at you (yes, that can feel a little creepy).
The best way to figure out if a guy likes you is to ask him! Might it feel awkward to do that? Sure, but it’s also a way to get a clear answer. You might want to resort to the middle-school tactic of asking your friends to ask his friends if he really likes you or not, but that makes the whole thing so much more public than it needs to be. You could try using Facebook or texts to figure it out, but they’re not great ways to get clear information.
Why not try the kind of “I message” we use in class? In an I message, you describe the situation, say what you feel, and say what you want or need. Below are two different I messages you might try (or make up your own!).
#1: “I’m trying to figure something out and I could use your help. I’m feeling a bit confused about what you think of me. I’m wondering, can you be honest with me and tell me whether you like me or not?”
#2: “It’s hard for me to figure out if someone likes me or not. I’d be a lot less anxious if I knew for sure. So, I was just wondering, do you like me?”
Asking such a question might seem scary, but remember, the worst a person can say is no, and you’re absolutely strong enough to hear that and be OK. Believe it! Then go ask him.

U.S. Allies Give British ISIS Members a Taste of Their Own Medicine

U.S. Allies Give British ISIS Members a Taste of Their Own Medicine

As ISIS continues to fester in the Middle East by spreading their ideology and growing their ranks, some have conveyed that the only thing the extremist organization understands is violence. Given this belief, many suggest that the only way to overcome ISIS is to use equally brutal and ruthless tactics on our enemies.
Although people want to believe we’ve evolved and act in a morally superior way compared to that of our previous selves, this may not necessarily be true. According to recent reports, U.S. allies were said to have delivered a bit of desert justice to a few British jihadists.
ISIS has made it clear the amount of respect it has for the world’s laws as it continues to travel down its path of genocide, beheading anyone that gets in their way or doesn’t bow down to Allah. Having publicly killed two Americans and two Brits with a former Army Ranger next in line, they’ve clearly demonstrated they have no intention of stopping their atrocious behavior.
While growing in numbers and strength, ISIS has began attacking their long time enemies and American allies, Kurdistan, in effort of – you guessed it – complete annihilation. As they fight back, it seems that some less than humanitarian acts may have taken place.
According to the Mail Online:
A former SAS soldier has told The Mail on Sunday he witnessed the capture of two British jihadis in the Iraqi desert – and says he believes they were later executed.
The trooper, who was working as a security adviser to a TV crew, said the Islamic State militants surrendered after sustaining serious gunshot wounds and running out of ammunition.
After being dragged from a trench, they were ‘punched, kicked and struck with rifles’ before a senior Kurdish commander intervened.
The source who remains unnamed, a British SAS “security adviser,” explained that the men were said to have been taken to a nearby Governor’s residence just two towns over in Jalawla. However, when he arrived a few days later, he found no trace of the men.
“I made inquiries but I was fobbed off with some pretty unsatisfactory answers which led me to suspect, and I can’t put it more strongly, that the pair of them had been bumped off,” he reportedly told the Mail Online.

It should be noted here that these reports are unverified. With the sources remaining confidential, there is no way to validate them. If proven to be true, Kurdistan could face a severe backlash for such action given, since it’s a violation of humanitarian law that could even prompt an abandonment from their allies.
Does the whole ‘eye for an eye’ concept apply here? Let us know what you think of what happened to these ISIS members in the comments below.

Ebola prevention: removing protective gear isn't easy

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed yesterday that a nurse who treated Thomas Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the US, has tested positive for Ebola. At the time of the announcement, the nurse — now identified as 26-year-old Nina Pham — had already been placed in isolation and was being treated for Ebola in Dallas, Texas. But in a conference call today, Tom Frieden, the CDC’s director, admitted that the CDC still doesn’t know how Pham contracted the disease while wearing protective gear recommended by the agency.
"If we knew that there was specific incident, such as a needlestick, then that means we could narrow it down to workers who have that kind of exposure," Frieden says. "But since we don’t know we need to cast the net more widely," and look at every aspect of treatment — including how health care workers don and remove their protective equipment. This is especially important because taking off protective gear safely isn’t exactly easy and "even a single, innocent, inadvertent slip can result in contamination," Frieden says.
According to the CDC, a health care worker has to remove four pieces of equipment immediately after leaving an isolation unit. Given the amount of items involved, taking them off might not seem like a particularly difficult process, but the key thing to remember here is that the order in which this is done (there are actually two suggested methods) is a matter of life and death.
The World Health Organization, on the other hand, breaks the whole process down in  a series of  eight or nine steps, depending on whether a healthcare worker is wearing boots. These steps are pretty much the same as the CDC's, however. And again, the order in which they take place is crucial.
Because of the complexity of the process, many hospitals and treatment centers around the world have implemented a "buddy system," where a second person oversees the removal of protective gear to make sure healthcare professionals don't accidentally touch a gloved hand to their face, for instance. Moreover, rooms in hospitals are typically designed to make the rules as easy to follow as possible. Shelves, for example, are placed in areas that nurses and doctors are unlikely to frequent as they make their way to the sink, writes Maryn McKenna over at Wired.
"EVEN A SINGLE, INNOCENT, INADVERTENT SLIP CAN RESULT IN CONTAMINATION."
There’s a lot of room for error, but the thing to remember here is that these procedures work. Every Ebola outbreak that has occurred until now has been contained, and that’s in no small part because of the care that was taken during the removal of hazardous materials from treatment sites. Of course, there’s always room for improvement. Frieden notes that the decontamination process in Dallas includes spraying medical gloves with a product that can kill the virus. But now that Pham has tested positive for Ebola, the CDC is examining the possibility of spraying medical gowns before their removal as well. "The bottom line is that the care of Ebola is hard," Frieden says. But "the control of Ebola is already something we know how to do."
For a more detailed look at the donning and removal of protective gear, check out this Ebola-specific video. It was presented at the National Ebola Virus Disease Summit earlier this year.

5 Things Super-Happy Couples Do Every Day

Lord knows this is not the sort of thing guys brag about. But my wife and I have a ridiculously happy marriage. Really, it's almost disgusting.
We paw each other in public. We goof around like a pair of simpletons. We basically act like giddy newlyweds in the middle of happy hour. Sometimes we'll do something so revolting, like sitting on the couch and drawing smiley faces on the bottoms of each other's feet, that we're forced to make hacking, gagging noises to maintain our dignity. Actually, this happened just last week.
See, I told you it was disgusting.
It hasn't always been this way. In fact, I'm not ashamed to admit that our current marital bliss is the result of almost a year of counseling, a desperate effort undertaken several years ago, when we appeared destined for doom. What we learned then is something all happy couples eventually discover: A good marriage is a bit like a pet boa constrictor: either you feed it every day or bad things happen. Daily habits are extremely helpful in forging solid marriages, says couples therapist Tina Tessina, author of How to Be a Couple and Still Be Free."If you're really interested in making your relationship work, little rituals are a great way to do it."
Want examples? Look no further than Tessina and her husband, Richard, who have developed an array of daily relationship builders during their 19 years of marriage: Every morning, they repeat their wedding vows to each other; they hold regular state-of-the-union meetings; and (my personal favorite) Tina routinely leaves Post-it Notes for Richard ("Hi, honey! Have a great day!") stuck to the underside of the toilet seat (think about it).
"Every marriage has what I call a relationship reservoir, or the stored-up emotional energy of the relationship," says Tessina. And although these daily habits are all very simple things, they help fill that reservoir. When there's a lot of positive energy there, you give each other a little pat on the butt or say, "I'm so glad I'm sharing my life with you," and you're storing it up. Then when the relationship is under stress, you'll have the energy you need to get through.
We asked happy couples across the United States to tell us about marriage-strengthening solutions they've developed. Try your hand at incorporating a few into your daily life and maybe you can be as ridiculously, embarrassingly, revoltingly happily married as I am.
Want to know the one thing that's most important to a successful marriage? That's easy. Walk up to your husband and surprise him with this one-question relationship quiz:

You: "Honey, what do you think is the one thing most important to a successful marriage?"
